THE THEME:
“Güipil
Weaving together different colors…
different threads…”
Guatemala is justifiably famous for it’s weaving.
The native dress of the Mayan women consists of four main articles of clothing.
El Güipil (hueepeel) is the blouse hand embroidered by the women.
“Because we are different threads of the same Güipil, let’s work all together for PEACE.”
THE SITE:
ANTIGUA GUATEMALA was founded as Santiago de Guatemala (Saint
James of Guatemala) and was one of the most important Spanish cities of the New World. As seat of the Captaincy General of Guatemala between the years1543 and 1773, it was the political, religious, economic and cultural center of the region comprised between Chiapas and Costa Rica. Because of the destructive 1773 earthquakes and the Royal Decrees of the same year, the capital was transferred to the Valle de la Ermita (Valley of the Hermitage) and was founded as La Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción (The New Guatemala of the Assumption) and that is why the abandoned city was called “La Antigua Guatemala” (the Old Guatemala).
With the 1541-42 straight outline, the main buildings were located around the Major Square: the Palace of the Captains General, the Cathedral with the Episcopal Palace, and the Municipal Palace. The colonial city was about one square kilometer and within that area are most of the monumental buildings
In the year 1965, the Pan American Geography and History Institute held its Eighth General Assembly declaring it “City Monument of America”.
In 1979 the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) included the city of Antigua Guatemala among the list of World Cultural and Natural Patrimony. With this distinction, the city is considered a universal monument.
